How to Send a Test Email in Conversations
Overview
This guide explains how to create a test contact, send a test email from the Conversations tab, configure your sender address for Mailgun or SMTP, and troubleshoot common delivery issues.
Creating a Test Contact
To begin, you'll need a contact to send your test email to.
Steps:
- From the agency view, click the switch button in the top left corner.
- Select the sub-account where you want to perform the test.
- Navigate to the Contacts section.
- Click Add Contact.
- Enter a first name and a valid email address for the contact, then save.
Sending the Test Email
After saving the contact, you will be redirected to their conversation page. Locate and click the Send Email button to compose and send your test message.
Configuring the Sender's Email
The sender email field is pre-filled with the logged-in user's email by default. You can change this if needed.
If Using Mailgun
When masking the sender email (e.g., using an address like testing@gmail.com), replies will be directed to an address on your Mailgun subdomain (e.g., testing@replies.yoursubdomain.com). These replies will still appear in the Conversations tab. To improve deliverability, use a sender email that matches your Mailgun subdomain (e.g., testing@yoursubdomain.com). You can also set up cold inbound email to capture messages sent to addresses ending with @replies.yoursubdomain.com.
If Using SMTP Integration
Go to Sub-account Settings → Email Services and copy the integrated sender email address. Use this address as the sender in the conversation. Depending on your SMTP provider, you may need to set up an alias or verify additional sender addresses.
Troubleshooting Email Delivery
If your test email isn't received, check the recipient's spam folder. For errors shown in the Conversation view, click the error icon to see details from your email service provider. If the error is unclear, contact your SMTP provider or check Mailgun logs if applicable.
If Email Replies Are Not Coming Back
After receiving the test email, reply to it and check if the reply appears in the Conversations tab. If it doesn't, refer to additional troubleshooting resources for email reply issues.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse the same test contact?
Yes, you can reuse a test contact. Ensure the email address is accessible for future tests.
Why does the reply-to address differ from the sender address with Mailgun?
This is intentional to route replies through your Mailgun subdomain for tracking in Conversations.
Why don't I see a Send Email button?
Confirm the contact has a valid email and that you are on the Email tab within the conversation.
Can I use my personal email as the sender?
For testing, yes. For production, use a verified sender address for better deliverability.
How do I identify where a delivery failure occurred?
Check the error message in Conversations. Rejection reasons from the recipient's server indicate their issue; domain-related errors suggest checking your DNS settings.
Are steps different for LC Email?
The contact creation and sending steps are the same. Sender configuration is managed for you with LC Email.
