Troubleshooting: Unable to Receive OTP for WhatsApp Number Verification

Understanding the Issue

If you are attempting to connect a phone number to WhatsApp within your CRM and are not receiving the one-time password (OTP), it is typically because the phone number is already in active use on a different WhatsApp service. A standard phone number can only be registered on one WhatsApp platform at a time, such as the WhatsApp Business App or the standard WhatsApp Messenger. When a number is already active, the standard verification process will be blocked.

Note on Coexistence

There is a separate, advanced feature called WhatsApp Coexistence that allows a single number to be used simultaneously on both the WhatsApp Business App and the CRM's API connection. This requires a specific, eligible account setup and a different onboarding process that bypasses the standard OTP check described here. If you need to use the same number in both places, you should verify your eligibility for Coexistence before proceeding with the solutions below.

How to Check if Your Number is Already Registered

Before troubleshooting, confirm whether the phone number is currently active on WhatsApp.

Method 1: Using a Web Browser

Open your web browser and navigate to the following URL, replacing the placeholder with the full phone number including the country code (no plus sign or spaces):

https://wa.me/<countrycode><phonenumber>

For example: https://wa.me/15551234567

Press Enter. If a WhatsApp chat window opens, the number is registered on WhatsApp. If you see an error message stating the phone number is invalid, the number is not currently registered.

Method 2: Using the WhatsApp Business App

Save the phone number as a contact on your mobile device. Open the WhatsApp Business App, start a new chat, and search for the contact. If the contact appears, the number is on WhatsApp. If it does not appear, it is not registered. A profile labeled as a "Business Account" or "Verified Business" indicates it is specifically on WhatsApp Business.

Resolving the Issue

The simplest solution is to use a different phone number that has never been registered with any WhatsApp service. You can then proceed with the standard onboarding and OTP verification process in your CRM using this new number.

Option 2: Delete the Existing WhatsApp Account

If you must use the same phone number, you must first remove its registration from WhatsApp. Please note this will permanently delete the chat history and data associated with that number on the WhatsApp platform.

  1. Install the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app on a mobile device.
  2. Open the app and verify the phone number in question.
  3. Go to Settings within the app.
  4. Navigate to Account and select Delete Account.
  5. Confirm the deletion.
  6. Wait several minutes, then return to your CRM and retry the OTP verification process for your WhatsApp connection.

If You Still Cannot Receive the OTP

If you have confirmed the phone number is not registered on any WhatsApp platform and you are still not receiving the OTP, please contact support. Provide the following details in your ticket:

  • The full phone number, including the country code.
  • Your sub-account ID.
  • The exact error message displayed during the verification attempt.
  • The approximate date and time of the failed attempt.

Our team can then investigate the issue further with our platform partners.
