Using Custom Objects in Dashboard Widgets
Visualize Your Custom Data
Your CRM allows you to track information unique to your business using Custom Objects. These can represent anything from service cases and project milestones to inventory items or specialized client details. With Custom Object Widgets, you can bring that specialized data into your main dashboard views, creating charts and metrics that reflect your specific operations.
What Custom Object Widgets Do
A Custom Object Widget is a dashboard component that displays data from one of your Custom Objects. Instead of just seeing standard contact or opportunity information, you can create visualizations based on the fields and records you've defined yourself. For example, if you track "Service Tickets" as a Custom Object, you could add a widget showing the average resolution time or the number of open tickets by status.
Available Chart Types and Metrics
You can display your Custom Object data in several formats to best tell your data's story.
Supported Chart Types
- Numeric (a single large number)
- Table
- Bar Chart
- Horizontal Bar Chart
- Line Chart
- Donut Chart
Available Calculations
For numeric fields within your Custom Object, you can calculate:
- Count: The total number of records.
- Sum: The total of values in a numeric field.
- Average: The mean value of a numeric field.
When you add a widget, a recommended chart type is selected automatically, but you can change it at any time. Table widgets can display multiple fields as columns, and certain charts allow you to group data by specific fields, such as a picklist.
Adding a Custom Object Widget to a Dashboard
Before you begin, ensure your Custom Object has been created and contains the fields you wish to report on.
- Navigate to your desired dashboard and click the Edit button (usually represented by a pencil icon).
- Click Add Widget.
- Select your preferred chart type from the list.
- In the list of data sources, find the category for your Custom Objects. It will be labeled with an example, such as "Custom Objects (Example: Projects)". Select it.
- Choose the specific metric or data view you want to display from your Custom Object.
- Configure any filters, date ranges, or visual themes for the widget.
- Click Save. The widget will now appear on your dashboard and display live data.
Using Custom Object Widgets in Custom Reports
You can also include these widgets in scheduled or shared custom reports.
- Go to Reports and then Custom Reports. Open an existing report or create a new one.
- Within the report editor, click Add Widget or a similar option.
- Find the section for your Custom Objects in the widget library.
- Drag the desired widget into your report layout.
- Configure the chart type, filters, and appearance.
- Save the report. You can then send it manually or set up an automated email schedule.
- Verify that your Custom Object actually contains records.
- Confirm you've selected a valid field for the metric (e.g., you can't calculate an average from a text field).
- Check that any date range filters include the period when your data exists.
- Ensure that dashboard-level quick filters or widget-specific filters aren't accidentally excluding all records.
Permissions and Management
Access to Custom Object Widgets is controlled by your existing dashboard permissions. Users with view access can see the widgets and interact with any applied quick filters. Users with edit or full access can modify the widget's configuration, including its chart type, metrics, and filters.
To copy a widget's setup, use the three-dot menu on the widget and select Duplicate. This creates a copy you can modify without affecting the original.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Widget Shows "No Data"
If your widget isn't displaying information, check the following:
Grouping by a Picklist Field
If your Custom Object has a select or picklist field, you can use it to group data in supported chart types (like bar or donut charts). This option will be available in the widget's configuration settings if the field is eligible for grouping.
