How to Locate and Manage Your Dedicated Domain SMTP Credentials
Overview
To send emails from external applications (like email clients or website forms) through your dedicated domain, you need specific SMTP credentials. These credentials are unique to each dedicated domain and are managed at the sub-account level. This guide explains how to create, reset, and delete these credentials, as well as details on usage limits, supported ports, and pricing.
Creating SMTP Credentials
SMTP credentials are created for a specific dedicated domain within a sub-account.
Steps to Create Credentials
- Navigate to your sub-account's settings.
- Go to the Email Service section, then select SMTP Service.
- Under Dedicated Domain and IP, choose SMTP Settings for your specific domain.
- Click the Create New SMTP User button.
- Enter a username and password for the new credential set.
Important Note: Account approval is required to create SMTP credentials. If the Create New SMTP User button is unavailable or a warning message appears, your account may require manual review. Please contact support for assistance.
Your SMTP Connection Details
- SMTP Server Address: smtp.mailgun.org
- Secure Connection: TLS/SSL (dependent on your email client or application)
- SMTP Username: The username you created, followed by your domain name (e.g., username@yourdomain.com)
- SMTP Password: The password you set during creation
- SMTP Ports: 25, 465 (SSL/TLS), 587 (STARTTLS), 2525
Supported SMTP Ports
The SMTP server (smtp.mailgun.org) accepts connections on several ports:
- Port 25: Standard SMTP port, typically used for server-to-server communication. It is often blocked by internet providers for client applications.
- Port 465: Used for connections that require SSL/TLS encryption from the very beginning.
- Port 587: The recommended port for most email clients and SMTP plugins. It uses STARTTLS to upgrade a connection to be secure.
- Port 2525: An alternative port to use if the other standard ports are blocked.
Resetting an SMTP Password
If you need to change the password for an existing SMTP credential:
- Locate the credential in your domain's SMTP Settings list.
- Click the reset option for that credential.
- A confirmation pop-up will appear. Click Reset Password to complete the process.
Deleting an SMTP Credential
To permanently remove an SMTP credential:
- Find the credential you wish to delete in your domain's SMTP Settings.
- Click the Delete option.
- Confirm the deletion in the pop-up modal that appears.
SMTP and Email Limits
Be aware of the following limitations:
- Credential Limit: You can create up to 5 SMTP credentials per dedicated domain.
- Daily Email Limit: Each account is limited to sending 1,500 emails per day.
Important: If the daily email limit is exceeded, all SMTP credentials for all dedicated domains on the account will be automatically deleted. You will need to recreate them once your sending volume is back within the allowed limit.
Email Pricing
Email sending through the CRM is charged at a rate of $0.675 per 1,000 emails sent. This charge is deducted from your account credits. You can review your credit balance and usage in the Agency View under the Billing section.
Note: Each recipient on an email (including To, CC, and BCC) is counted as a separate email for billing purposes.
IMAP Settings Information
The CRM platform does not host email mailboxes. Therefore, POP and IMAP protocols, which are used for retrieving emails, are not supported. Your SMTP credentials are for sending mail only.
If you need to set up an email client to receive emails, you must obtain the IMAP settings from your email hosting provider (e.g., Google Workspace, Bluehost, etc.).
Troubleshooting
Unable to Create SMTP User
If the option to create a new SMTP user is disabled or a warning appears, it indicates that your account does not currently have approval for this feature. This is managed by an automated system. Please contact support with your sub-account ID, the relevant domain name, and a screenshot of the message to request access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I see a message saying "SMTP Credential creation is blocked. Please contact support"?
This message typically appears if your account has exceeded usage limits (like the 1,500 emails per day limit) or has been flagged by security controls. Contact support with your sub-account ID to have the issue reviewed.
Can I create SMTP credentials at the agency level?
No. SMTP credentials can only be created at the sub-account level and only for dedicated domains, not for domains assigned by the agency.
What happens if I exceed the daily email limit?
All SMTP credentials on the account will be automatically deleted. You must recreate them after your account's sending volume returns to within the allowed limit.
Which port should I use for my email client or application?
Port 587 with STARTTLS is the recommended and most widely compatible option.
