Resolving "This phone number is already registered to a WhatsApp account" Error
Understanding the Error
This error message appears when you attempt to onboard a phone number for WhatsApp Business that is currently associated with an existing WhatsApp account. Each phone number can only be linked to one WhatsApp account at any given time. The number must be completely disconnected from its current account before it can be used for a new onboarding process.
Why This Error Occurs
You might encounter this error for several reasons:
- The phone number is actively being used with the WhatsApp mobile application, either for personal use or with a WhatsApp Business account.
- The number is already registered and active on a different WhatsApp Business Platform account, either within your CRM or with another service provider.
- The number was recently disconnected from a WhatsApp account, but the change is still being processed by WhatsApp's systems.
- The number has a previous association with WhatsApp that has not been fully cleared.
How to Fix the Issue
Step 1: Disconnect the Number from the Existing Account
First, you must ensure the phone number is no longer linked to any active WhatsApp account.
If the number is active on a mobile phone:
- Open the WhatsApp application on that device.
- Navigate to the Settings menu.
- Select the Account option.
- Choose the option to Delete the account.
- Confirm the deletion by entering the phone number when prompted.
Important: Deleting the account will permanently erase the chat history and disconnect the number from WhatsApp.
If the number is connected to another business provider:
- You will need to contact the current provider (e.g., a different CRM or WhatsApp API provider) and request that they fully release or delete the number from their WhatsApp Business Platform account.
Step 2: Wait for the Number Status to Refresh
After the number has been disconnected, WhatsApp's systems need time to update their records.
- Wait for approximately 3 minutes to allow the status of the number to refresh.
- In some instances, this process may take a little longer due to backend processing by WhatsApp.
- Avoid attempting to onboard the number again immediately or repeatedly, as this can potentially cause further delays.
Step 3: Retry the Onboarding Process
Once you have waited for the system to refresh:
- Return to the WhatsApp onboarding screen within your CRM.
- Enter the phone number again.
- Follow the standard verification steps to complete the setup.
This error is a standard security measure implemented by WhatsApp to maintain the one-to-one relationship between a phone number and an account. Once the number is properly released and the system has updated, you should be able to onboard it successfully.
