Using Conditional Logic to Create Dynamic Surveys

Understanding Conditional Logic

Conditional Logic transforms your surveys from static questionnaires into dynamic, interactive conversations. It allows your survey to change what a respondent sees and where they go next based on the answers they provide. You can create personalized paths without needing to build multiple separate surveys.

With Conditional Logic, you can automatically show or hide questions, display tailored messages, redirect users to a different webpage, mark a respondent as disqualified, or send them to a different slide within the survey. This creates a more relevant experience for the user and helps you collect better, more targeted data.

Important Note: The Conditional Logic feature described here is only available for surveys that are newly created or cloned. These logic rules are not included when you restore an account from a snapshot.

Benefits of Using Conditional Logic

Implementing Conditional Logic in your surveys offers several key advantages:

  • Personalization: Tailor the survey journey for each individual by displaying only the questions that are relevant to their previous answers.
  • Higher Completion Rates: By skipping irrelevant sections, you shorten the survey experience, making respondents more likely to finish.
  • Automatic Lead Qualification: Instantly identify and route qualified and unqualified respondents based on their responses.
  • Complex Survey Paths: Design sophisticated, branching survey flows that guide respondents down different logical paths.
  • Efficiency: Automate actions like disqualification or redirection, reducing the need for manual review of responses after the fact.

Available Actions

You can configure Conditional Logic rules to perform the following actions:

  • Show / Hide Fields: Display or conceal specific questions, fields, or entire slides.
  • Display Custom Message: Show a personalized text message to the respondent.
  • Redirect to URL: Send the respondent to another webpage after they submit the survey.
  • Disqualify Lead: Automatically mark a respondent as unqualified.
  • Jump To: Skip the respondent directly to another specified slide or question within the survey.

Note: Rules are processed in the order they are listed. If multiple rules apply, later Show/Hide rules will override earlier ones. Actions like Redirect, Display Message, Disqualify, and Jump To will execute based on their specific evaluation behavior.

How to Set Up Conditional Logic

Follow these steps to add logic to your survey.

Step 1: Open Your Survey

From your CRM dashboard, go to the Sites section and open Surveys. Select an existing survey or create a new one to open the Survey Builder.

Step 2: Plan Your Survey Structure

Before adding logic, ensure your survey has all the necessary components. Think about the different paths a respondent could take, such as slides for qualified leads, disqualified leads, booking appointments, or final thank-you pages.

Step 3: Access the Conditional Logic Panel

In the Survey Builder, click on the Conditional Logic button in the toolbar or open the panel from the right side of the screen.

Step 4: Create a New Rule

Click Add New Condition. First, select the action you want the rule to perform from the list of available actions (Show/Hide, Display Message, Redirect, Disqualify, or Jump To).

Step 5: Build the Rule Conditions

Use the three-step builder to define what triggers the rule.

  1. Select Field: Choose the specific survey question or slide that will act as the trigger.
  2. Select State: Choose an operator that defines the condition, such as "Is Equal To," "Contains," "Greater Than," "Between," or "Is Empty."
  3. Provide Value: Enter the specific value that the respondent's answer must match for the rule to run.

You can add multiple conditions to a single rule, connecting them with either AND (all conditions must be true) or OR (any one condition can be true). A single rule can use only one of these connectors, not a mix of both.

Step 6: Configure the Action

Based on the action you selected in Step 4, complete the configuration. This might involve selecting which fields to show or hide, typing a custom message, entering a redirect URL, choosing a destination slide, or confirming the disqualification action.

Step 7: Save and Test

Save your rule. It is crucial to preview your survey and test different answer combinations to ensure all logical paths behave as you expect before publishing the survey live.

Creating Multiple Outcomes

A single survey can lead to different endings based on respondent answers. For example:

  • Qualified Path: If a respondent meets your criteria, you can have them continue to more questions, jump to a booking slide, or see a special "qualified" thank-you message.
  • Disqualified Path: If a respondent does not qualify, you can show them a custom message, jump them to a "disqualified" slide, and stop asking further questions.
  • Temporary Branches: You can send a respondent to another slide to gather extra information before returning them to the main survey flow. The system includes protection to prevent circular paths that could create an endless loop.

Supported Field Types

Conditional Logic can be applied to answers from a wide variety of survey field types, including:

  • Single Line Text and Multi Line Text
  • Number, Monetary, and Score fields
  • Date Picker
  • Dropdown (single and multiple selection)
  • Radio Select and Checkbox
  • Terms & Conditions acceptance
  • File Upload and Signature

You can also create rules based on static elements like Text blocks, HTML content, Images, and Terms & Conditions displays to show or hide them.
