Understanding the Domain Redemption Period and Recovery Fee
What is the Domain Redemption Period?
After a domain name expires, it doesn't immediately become available for anyone to register. Instead, it often enters a special recovery phase known as the redemption period. This is a limited window of time during which the previous owner can still reclaim the domain before it is permanently released. To restore ownership during this period, you must typically pay a redemption fee in addition to the standard renewal cost.
Why a Redemption Fee is Required
A redemption fee is not the same as a standard renewal fee. Once a domain enters the redemption period, it has moved into a special administrative status. Restoring it requires a more complex recovery process that involves additional steps between the domain registrar and the domain registry. This fee is an industry-standard charge that covers the costs associated with this specific recovery procedure.
Who Sets the Fee?
The redemption fee is not set by the CRM platform. It is determined by the domain registry (the organization that manages the domain extension, like .com) and/or the domain registrar (the company that provides the registration service). The CRM platform facilitates the recovery process but does not control the underlying costs charged by these third-party domain providers.
How to Recover a Domain in Redemption
Recovering a domain during the redemption period is time-sensitive. To initiate the process, you should first check the domain's status within your CRM dashboard or by contacting support. Then, follow the platform's specific procedure for requesting domain restoration. You will be informed of the total cost, which will include both the redemption fee and the standard renewal fee, before completing the recovery.
What Happens if a Domain is Not Recovered?
If the domain is not recovered before the redemption period ends, it will be deleted and released back into the pool of available domain names. At that point, anyone can register it on a first-come, first-served basis, and you will permanently lose ownership.
How to Avoid Redemption Fees
The best way to avoid redemption fees is to ensure your domains are renewed before they expire. You can enable auto-renewal for your domains within the CRM to prevent accidental expiration. It is also good practice to keep your payment method up to date and monitor renewal reminder emails.
