What is the Advanced Builder?

The Advanced Builder is a powerful, visual workspace for designing and managing your CRM's automations. It provides a freeform canvas where you can construct complex workflows by dragging, dropping, and connecting triggers and actions. This environment supports building multiple trigger paths and parallel branches simultaneously, all without altering the underlying execution logic of your workflows. It is engineered for enhanced flexibility, better performance, and improved team collaboration.

Key features include bulk selection tools that allow you to perform actions like enabling or disabling multiple nodes, applying formatting, or adding descriptive notes to entire sections of your workflow at once. This is particularly useful for maintaining and annotating large, intricate automations.

Accessing the Advanced Builder

To open the Advanced Builder, navigate to any existing workflow and locate the toggle switch in the top-left corner of the builder interface. You can switch between the Standard and Advanced views for the same workflow. The workflow name is displayed at the top of the builder; if the name is long, it will be truncated with an ellipsis (...). Hover your cursor over the name to see the full title.

Stats Mode

Stats Mode allows you to review the performance of your workflows directly within the builder. You can see data on trigger enrollments and the results of communication actions without needing to navigate away.

To use Stats Mode:

Open your workflow in the Advanced Builder.
Activate Stats Mode.
Select a trigger or a specific statistic displayed for an action.

For triggers, you can review:

Attempted: The number of contacts evaluated by the trigger.
Matched: The contacts that successfully met the trigger conditions.
Unmatched: The contacts that did not meet the trigger conditions.

Clicking on a statistic will open a detailed view where you can examine individual contact results and investigate matching issues. For communication actions, Stats Mode shows delivery and engagement metrics, which can also be clicked for a detailed report. Note that you cannot edit a workflow while Stats Mode is active. Trigger statistics reflect data from the last 30 days.

The Canvas and Building Workflows

The main workspace is the canvas, where you visually construct your automation.

Adding and Connecting Steps

Open the Triggers & Actions panel to see all available elements. You can configure items from this panel or drag them directly onto the canvas. To connect nodes, click and drag from the connector handle (or the + icon) on one node to another.

Auto-Connecting Steps

When you drag a trigger or action from the sidebar onto the canvas, it can automatically connect based on where you drop it:

To extend a branch, drop the step onto the last node in a sequence.
To insert a step, drop it between two already connected nodes.

You can select multiple nodes at once (using a marquee selection or holding Shift) to move entire blocks. You can also copy and paste branches between different workflows to reuse successful patterns. Remember to configure any new step after placing it on the canvas, as unconfigured actions will not execute.

Go-To Connections and Parallel Branches

The Advanced Builder provides tools for creating non-linear workflow paths.

Trigger Go-To Connections

A Go-To connection allows you to route a trigger to start at a specific action within the workflow, rather than at the beginning.

To create one, drag the trigger's Go-To connector and drop it onto the desired target action.
Go-To connections are visually represented by a dashed line with an arrowhead, while standard sequential connections are solid lines.
When the trigger fires, the contact will jump directly to the target action and proceed from that point.

Delinked Nodes (Parallel Branches)

You can create independent, or parallel, branches that operate separately within the same workflow. This is ideal for handling multiple triggers or different outcomes.

Build a cluster of actions anywhere on the canvas.
Connect a trigger to the start of this branch using a Go-To connection.
Each branch runs independently.

Default Path for Parallel Branches

In workflows with multiple parallel branches, you can designate a Default Path. This determines which branch is used when testing a workflow or when a contact enters from another workflow.

A root node labeled "Default Path" is present.
On the first action of a branch, click the branch icon to set it as the Default Path.
A solid trigger connector indicates the Default Path, while a dashed connector indicates a branch accessed via a Go-To connection.

Sticky Notes and Color Coding

Enhance collaboration and documentation by adding Sticky Notes to your canvas. You can attach notes to specific nodes or place them anywhere to provide context, instructions, or reminders. Use color coding to categorize notes and improve visual organization.

Inline Workflow Comments

Add comments directly within the workflow to facilitate team discussion and feedback on specific parts of the automation. This feature helps keep communication contextual and actionable.

Right-Click Quick Actions

Right-clicking on any node or an empty area of the canvas brings up a context menu with quick actions. This menu provides fast access to common functions like adding notes, enabling/disabling nodes, or formatting selections.

Use keyboard shortcuts to navigate and edit your workflows more efficiently. These shortcuts allow for quick zooming, panning across the canvas, and selecting multiple elements.

Tidy Up (Auto-Layout)

The Tidy Up feature automatically reorganizes the nodes on your canvas to create a cleaner, more readable layout. This is especially helpful after making significant changes to a complex workflow.

Workflow Switcher

Easily switch between different workflows without leaving the Advanced Builder interface, allowing for quick comparisons and edits across your automations.
