Setting Up an Abandoned Checkout Workflow Trigger for E-commerce

What Is the Abandoned Checkout Trigger?

The Abandoned Checkout trigger activates when a customer adds items to their cart, provides a valid email address, but does not complete their purchase within a time window you specify. This trigger works with both your CRM’s built-in e-commerce stores and connected external platforms, offering a unified way to automate follow-up campaigns for recovering lost sales.

Key Benefits

  • Cross-Platform Automation: Use a single trigger for both your CRM store and external e-commerce platforms.
  • Advanced Filtering: Narrow down triggers based on cart value, location, specific products, or order source.
  • Custom Timing: Set the exact number of minutes after which a cart is considered abandoned.
  • Future-Proof: Designed to support additional external e-commerce integrations as they become available.
  • Increased Conversions: Well-timed, personalized recovery messages can help reclaim a significant portion of abandoned orders.

How to Set Up the Abandoned Checkout Trigger

Create a New Workflow

Go to AutomationWorkflows from the left sidebar. Click + Create Workflow in the top-right corner and choose Start from Scratch.

Add the Trigger

In the workflow builder, click Add Trigger. From the trigger selection panel, navigate to the Ecommerce Stores section and select Abandoned Checkout.

Configure the Trigger

Review the trigger name—you can keep the default or customize it. Then, set the following:

  • Duration (in minutes): Define how long the system should wait before treating the checkout as abandoned.
  • Filters: Use the dropdown to add conditions like Cart Value, Country, Global Products, Order Source, Store Name, or Sub Source to refine when the trigger activates.

Optional: Add Conditional Logic

After the trigger, you can insert a Condition step to further segment contacts—for example, sending different follow-ups based on cart value or order source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the trigger work if no email is provided?

No. A valid email address is required for the system to mark the checkout as abandoned and initiate the workflow.

What’s the ideal abandonment window?

This varies by business. For lower-priced, fast-moving items, 15–30 minutes is common. For higher-value or custom products, consider several hours. Test different durations to find what works best for your store.

Can I trigger workflows only for specific products?

Yes. Use the Global Products filter to select one or more products—only carts containing those items will activate the trigger.

Are SMS reminders supported for external stores?

Yes. Once the trigger fires, you can use any workflow action—including SMS, email, or calls—regardless of whether the order came from your CRM store or an external platform.

Where can I view recovery analytics?

Check the Analytics tab within your workflow for metrics like messages sent and revenue recovered. You can also review recovered orders in the Payments → Orders section of your CRM.
