How to Customize Standard Object Names in Your CRM

Understanding Standard Object Renaming

Your CRM platform allows administrators to customize the names of standard objects—Contacts, Opportunities, and Companies—to better align with your organization's terminology. This feature enables you to use labels like "Clients," "Deals," or "Organizations" throughout the system while maintaining all underlying functionality.

The renaming process only affects display labels. All internal data structures, automation workflows, API integrations, and reporting functions remain unchanged and fully operational.

Benefits of Custom Object Names

  • Business Terminology Alignment: Match CRM labels to your team's everyday language
  • Improved User Adoption: Familiar terms encourage consistent system usage
  • Streamlined Onboarding: New team members understand the terminology immediately
  • Clearer Reporting: Dashboards and filters use your business vocabulary
  • System Safety: Changes affect only display names, not underlying data
  • Universal Consistency: Updates appear across navigation, workflows, and all system modules
  • AI Conversation Alignment: Chatbots and AI features automatically use your custom names

How to Rename Standard Objects

Note: Only users with administrator privileges and access to object settings can perform renaming operations. Other users will see the updated names but cannot modify them.

  1. Navigate to Settings in your CRM
  2. Select the Objects section
  3. Locate the object you wish to rename (Contacts, Opportunities, or Companies)
  4. Click the three-dot menu next to the object name
  5. Select Edit from the menu options
  6. In the Object Name section, update both fields:
    • Singular Name: Appears on individual record views
    • Plural Name: Appears on list views and filter options
  7. Click Save Changes to apply your modifications

Changes typically take effect immediately throughout the system, including navigation menus, filters, reports, dashboards, and all associated modules.

Naming Rules and Limitations

  • All three standard objects (Contacts, Opportunities, Companies) can be renamed
  • Maximum name length: 50 characters for both singular and plural forms
  • Names must be unique—no two objects can share identical singular or plural names
  • Internal object identifiers remain unchanged to maintain system stability
  • Only display labels are modified; API field names and merge fields remain consistent

Common Examples

  • Contacts → Client (singular) / Clients (plural)
  • Opportunities → Deal (singular) / Deals (plural)
  • Companies → Organization (singular) / Organizations (plural)
