Resolving WhatsApp Onboarding Payment Method Conflict

About the Payment Method Conflict Error

If you receive the error message "Please create a new WhatsApp Business Account since a payment method already exists for the current WhatsApp Business Account" during WhatsApp setup, this indicates that the WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) you're attempting to connect already has an active payment method associated with it.

This conflict prevents the onboarding process from completing successfully because Meta's policy does not allow a WABA with an existing payment method to be connected through multiple platforms.

Why This Error Occurs

This situation typically arises when:

  • Your WhatsApp Business Account was previously set up directly through Meta or through another service provider
  • The existing WABA already has billing information configured
  • Meta's systems prevent duplicate billing by blocking the same WABA from being connected to multiple Business Solution Providers

How to Resolve the Issue

To successfully complete the WhatsApp onboarding process in your CRM, you'll need to create a new WhatsApp Business Account through your Meta Business Manager.

Step 1: Access Meta Business Settings

Navigate to the Meta Business Settings page and log in using the Facebook account that manages your business assets.

Step 2: Create a New WhatsApp Business Account

Once logged into Meta Business Settings:

  1. In the left navigation menu, select Accounts, then choose WhatsApp Accounts
  2. Click the + Add button
  3. Select the option to Create a New WhatsApp Business Account
  4. Provide a distinctive name for your new account (such as adding "-New" to your business name)
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the account creation

Step 3: Complete Onboarding in CRM

Return to your CRM's WhatsApp onboarding workflow. When prompted to select a WhatsApp Business Account, choose the newly created WABA you just set up. Proceed with the remaining onboarding steps as normal.

Important Considerations

  • Do not delete your original WABA if it's currently being used for other services or active campaigns
  • If you need to verify which payment methods are associated with your accounts, check your Meta Payment Settings
  • Always create and use a new WABA when connecting a phone number that was previously associated with another provider
