Why Isn't My Business Name Displaying After CNAM Registration?

Understanding CNAM and Its Limitations

CNAM (Caller ID Name) is a technology that enables the display of a caller's registered name alongside their phone number on recipient devices. Instead of just showing a number like (555) 123-4567, it might display "Your Business Name," helping build trust and improve answer rates. However, CNAM doesn't prevent spam labeling—it only provides additional caller identification.

How CNAM Registration Works

When you register for CNAM through your CRM, you provide your business name and phone number for database listing. When you make outbound calls, your number is transmitted normally. The receiving carrier then queries various CNAM databases to find a name match for that number and displays it if available.

Common Reasons for Non-Display

Several factors can prevent your business name from appearing:

  • Database Fragmentation: There are multiple CNAM databases managed independently, and carriers may use different ones, leading to inconsistent results
  • Carrier Support Limitations: Not all carriers support CNAM, and those that do may not query all available databases
  • Mobile Device Limitations: CNAM is primarily a landline technology, and mobile carriers often treat it as a premium feature with limited implementation
  • Propagation Delays: Database updates can take several days or weeks to propagate across all systems

Geographic and Technical Constraints

CNAM is currently only supported for United States numbers. Even within the US, reliable CNAM display occurs in less than 20% of calls due to the fragmented nature of the databases and varying carrier implementations.

What You Can Do

While CNAM reliability is limited, you can:

  • Ensure your registration information is accurate and complete
  • Allow sufficient time for database propagation (typically 2-4 weeks)
  • Understand that inconsistent display is inherent to the current CNAM system
  • Consider that recipients may see your name if they have you saved in their contacts, regardless of CNAM status

The CRM platform continues to work with carriers and database providers to improve CNAM reliability and coverage for all users.
