Transferring an Existing Domain to Your CRM

What is a Domain Transfer?

A domain transfer is the process of moving the management of your domain name from another provider (like GoDaddy or Namecheap) to your CRM platform. By completing a transfer, you can handle domain registration, DNS settings, renewals, and connections to your websites and email all from a single, centralized dashboard within the CRM.

Key Benefits

Transferring your domain offers several advantages:

  • Centralized Management: Control your domain, websites, and email tools from one location.
  • Enhanced Security: Manage DNS records directly in the CRM without needing external logins.
  • Preserved Registration Term: Your existing registration period is carried over, and one additional year is typically added upon transfer (some domain extensions may be exceptions).
  • Clear Pricing: A fixed, upfront fee is applied for the transfer.
  • Seamless Integration: Once transferred, the domain is instantly ready to use with the CRM's site and funnel builders.

Before You Begin: Prerequisites

Before initiating a transfer, ensure your domain meets the following requirements:

  • The domain must be at least 60 days old.
  • The domain must be unlocked at your current registrar.
  • WHOIS privacy protection must be temporarily disabled.
  • DNSSEC, if enabled, must be turned off.
  • You must have the EPP code (or authorization code) from your current registrar.
  • The administrative contact email address listed in the WHOIS record must be current and accessible, as approval emails will be sent there.
  • Your CRM wallet must have sufficient funds to cover the transfer fee.

It is also highly recommended that you save a copy of your current DNS settings from your existing provider.

Enabling Domain Transfers for Your Agency

If you are an agency administrator, you must first enable the domain purchase feature.

  1. Switch to Agency view using the location selector in the top-left corner of the screen.
  2. Navigate to Settings.
  3. Go to the Company section and find the Domain Purchase option.
  4. Toggle the setting to ON to activate the feature.

Enabling Domain Transfers for Sub-Accounts

After enabling the feature agency-wide, you can grant access to specific sub-accounts.

  1. In Agency view, go to Settings.
  2. Click on Domain Purchase.
  3. Enable the feature individually for each sub-account that needs to perform domain transfers.

How to Transfer a Domain

Step 1: Initiate the Transfer

  1. Within the desired sub-account, go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to Domains & URL Redirects > Domains.
  3. If the domain is already listed as an external domain, click the Transfer-In button next to it. For a new domain, click the Purchase/Transfer Domain or Transfer-In Domain button.
  4. Enter the domain name you wish to transfer and click Continue.

Step 2: Eligibility Check

The CRM will automatically check if your domain is eligible for transfer based on ICANN rules and technical status. If eligible, you will see details including the domain name, current registrar, current expiration date, new expiration date (with the added year), and the applicable fee.

If the Continue button is disabled, the domain is not eligible. Common reasons include:

  • The current registrar is not supported.
  • The domain is already managed within the CRM.
  • The domain extension (TLD) is not supported.
  • The domain was registered or transferred within the last 60 days.
  • The domain has a restrictive status (like pendingDelete or redemptionPeriod).
  • The transfer would exceed the maximum allowed registration term.

A message will explain the specific reason for ineligibility.

Step 3: Review and Save DNS Records

To avoid service interruptions for your website and email, it is critical to replicate your DNS records. You have options for retrieving these records from your current provider.

Note: Your domain registrar (where you bought the domain) and your DNS provider may be different if you have changed the domain's nameservers. For example, if you bought the domain from GoDaddy but use Cloudflare's nameservers, you must get your DNS records from Cloudflare.

Recommended Method: Upload a DNS Zone File

This method is recommended to ensure you import all existing DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT, etc.) accurately. You will need to obtain a zone file from your current DNS provider.

Important Note

The domain transfer feature may not be enabled on all accounts by default. If you do not see the option to transfer a domain, please contact support to have it enabled for your agency.
