How to Configure SMS Compliance Settings
What Are SMS Compliance Settings?
SMS Compliance Settings help ensure your text messages meet carrier requirements by automatically adding sender identification and opt-out instructions when they are missing from your outbound messages. This feature protects your deliverability, reduces the risk of messages being filtered or blocked, and maintains a consistent, trustworthy communication experience for your contacts.
Key Benefits
Enabling SMS Compliance Settings offers several advantages:
- Automatic Compliance: Adds required sender ID and opt-out language to the first message in a conversation if absent.
- Improved Deliverability: Meets carrier expectations, lowering the chance of messages being flagged or blocked.
- Brand Recognition: Clear sender identification helps contacts know who is messaging them, building trust.
- Scheduled Re-insertion: Optionally reapplies compliance text at regular intervals to maintain ongoing compliance.
- No Duplicates: Avoids adding opt-out language if it is already included in your message.

Tips and Guidelines
Keep these points in mind when configuring your settings:
- The first message in any SMS conversation will always include both sender ID and opt-out instructions if they are missing.
- Opt-out text is only added if not already present in your message.
- Users in trial mode, accounts under 15 days old, and those with restricted permissions may not be able to disable these settings.
- Use clear, simple wording for both opt-out and sender ID text. Avoid spam-like formatting, excessive emojis, or vague references.
- Common compliant opt-out keywords include: STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, or QUIT.
Default Behavior
New sub-accounts have compliance settings enabled by default, while existing ones may need to be configured manually. Even with periodic insertion disabled, the first outbound message in a conversation will always include compliance text if missing.
Smart Detection
The system checks for existing opt-out phrases in your messages and will not add duplicate text. It looks for full phrases like “Reply STOP to unsubscribe” rather than single keywords used in normal context.
